The Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs is one of the world’s biggest races and you can watch it live on Sky Sports Racing on Saturday 5 September. 18 runners are set to go to post, but one horse sets a standard that the others may struggle to surpass.
If there’s to be a fairytale winner of the 2020 Kentucky Derby, it’s must be Finnick The Fierce. He has one eye, like previous winner Patch, but this is one fairytale that may be left untold.
The once champion 2-year-old Storm The Court is no champion now, while other horses that may struggle to play a leading role include Enforceable, Major Fed, South Bend, Mr. Big News, Necker Island, Winning Impression, and NY Traffic.
Steve Asmussen has taken over the training of Max Player and he could live up to his name if he has improved him. Apparently, connections have been looking to change his run style so, as that means he could blow-in or blowout, he’s hard to recommend.
Sole Volante has an explosive finishing kick when on song but that may prove a better weapon on turf than on the dirt, but he’s respected all the same.
Thousand Words represents trainer Bob Baffert and, though his form has been up and down, his grinding action should suit the race. He looks to have an each-way chance.
Authentic was favourite for the Kentucky Derby over the winter and he could get an easy lead, but his stamina is doubtful. Honor A.P. has run him down twice already, but he needs to put a bad prep race behind him. However, that was only his prep, and he may be cherry ripe for his biggest assignment.
Other horses that could fill the frame are Attachment Rate, who many pundits rate as the best outsider. He met all sorts of trouble in running last time and could outrun his odds with a better passage. King Guillermo could also be a big challenger if he can match the times of some of his workouts. But he needs to prove he’s as good over 10-furlongs after a break.
Horses with the ‘potential improvement factor’ always need to be considered, but sometimes the obvious is staring us in the face. That looks the case with Tiz The Law who, even at odds-on, looks a bet against this big field. A defeat at Churchill Downs is the only negative but a repeat of the form of any of his Grade 1 wins will suffice.
