Atletico Madrid Form
Atletico Madrid qualified for this year’s Champions League by finishing second in La Liga last season, but they are only fourth this season as they enter the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The finished second in Group D behind Juventus to get this far, winning seven of their 10 points at home with a 2-2 draw with Juventus, a 1-0 over Bayer Leverkusen, and a 2-0 win over Lokomotiv Moskow.
They’re also unbeaten in their last four home games in La Liga since losing 0-1 to Barcelona on December 1, with 1-0, 2-0, and 2-1 wins, and a 0-0 draw.
Kieran Trippier remains on the injured list, whilst Joao Felix, Diego Costa, and Herrera are also doubtful.
Liverpool remain unbeaten after 26 games of the English Premier League season, but that unbeaten record does not extend to this season’s Champions League performances. Liverpool lost their opening game in Group E 2-0 in Napoli but did easily brush aside Genk 1-4 and Red Bull Salzburg 0-2 on their travels.
But what could be an important factor for Liverpool is the improvement they’ve shown defence in the last few months, securing 11 of their last 12 Premier League wins with clean sheets.
Liverpool have also been lucky with injuries this season, and Mane is the only slight doubt amongst their regular starters.
Atletico Madrid vs Liverpool Head-To-Heads
Atletico Madrid and Liverpool have played each other four times before in Europe. The first time they clashed was in the 2008/9 Champions League and both matches ended 1-1 as both teams qualified from Group D. Atletico exited at the round-of-16 stage and Liverpool exited in the quarterfinals.
The two teams then met in the Europa League semifinals the following season when both teams won at home before Atletico progressed to the final after extra time.
Free Tip for Atletico Madrid vs Liverpool
Atletico Madrid haven’t got the same European class as Liverpool but it’s not in their nature to make it easy for teams at the Estadio Metropolitano. They’re unbeaten in three Champions League games at home this season and like to keep things tight.
Liverpool have also been keeping things tight of late and they may well be inclined to give Atletico plenty of respect in this opening leg. There will be plenty of takers about the 4/6 for less than 2.5 goals but, with 11 clean sheets in their last 12 Premier League games, Liverpool to win to nil at around 5/2 (3.50) offers better value.
