Brit Plant Direct Novices’ Handicap Chase (2.25)

This is only the fourth renewal of this three-mile handicap chase and the small sample of winning statistics aren’t much help in narrowing down the field as there have been three very differently rated and weighted winners.

However, Tara Flow looks a really interesting proposition. She won three times over hurdles in the 2015/16 season, with the last of those wins coming off a mark of 130. She was then highly-tried in two runs the following season before sustaining an injury.

She made her reappearance in January this year, after two years off the track, and she probably needed her first two runs back in better-company to regain her full fitness. She was much better in her first handicap chase last time off a mark of 121, when she stayed on late over a shorter trip to be second after being hampered on more than one occasion.

What really makes her look a bet today though is her best hurdle form came at Uttoxeter on soft ground and she returns to the course for the first time since those two runs today. On the second of those runs, she also beat Jester Jet quite comfortably, and she is now rated in the 140’s.

Marston’s Pedigree Handicap Hurdle (3.00)

A valuable first prize of over £30,000 has attracted a competitive field for this class two handicap hurdle over 2 miles 3 furlongs and 207 yards and it’s interesting that six of the last seven winners of the race have been rated between 122 and 128.

Despite the big prize, recent winners have also hardly hidden their potential, as the last six winners have all had at least five runs that season prior to winning. Those stats draw the eye to both Hill Sixteen and Forecast.

Hill Sixteen catches the eye, because this will be his first run in handicap company. It also looks like connections may well have secured a low-level win last time in order to get him raised the few pounds he needed to go up to guarantee a place in the race.

However, on this occasion, Forecast is just preferred. His two runs over this sort of trip this season include a third to Stayers’ Hurdle winner Paisley Park, whilst he also won by 15-lengths on the only occasion he encountered heavy ground.
