Noseda To Nab Newbury Showpiece

It’s Grand National Day on Saturday (April 5) and we’re backing two horses in the big race, one with rock-solid credentials and a big outsider with a live chance. We’ve also got free tips for the Gaskells Handicap Hurdle, the Betway Mersey Novices’ Hurdle, the Doom Bar Maghull Novices’ Chase, and the Ryanair Stayers’ Hurdle.

The handicapper has raised Poker Play 11 pounds to a mark of 137 for his nine-length win at Uttoxeter last time, but his trainer David Pipe was probably happy with that as it guaranteed him a run here in this race which he’s won three times in the last eight years. Those three winners were also rated 137, 138, and 138 and Poker Play is fancied to go close with the David Pipe stable also banging in several well-backed winners in the last couple of weeks.

Umbrigado could give David Pipe a quick-fire double in the Betway Mersey Novices’ Hurdle. There certainly doesn’t look to be top-class novice-hurdler in the field so, even though he has a few pounds to find with some of the more exposed horses, there’s every chance he can, especially as he’s the only unbeaten hurdler in the line-up. The form of his three wins has been franked by several horses that have finished behind him and the way he’s finished those races over shorter trips suggests he’ll be well suited to this step up to two and a half miles.

Lalor was pulled up in the Arkle at Cheltenham but that poor run means he’s a very backable price here, as he would surely have been the favourite if he hadn’t run at Cheltenham. That’s because he’s won at this meeting in each of the last two years, winning a bumper in 2017 and a novice hurdle in 2018. He beat some decent horses here last year and, though connections will be hoping that the ground dries up to as near good-to-soft as possible, he did also win on soft ground last year.

Sam Spinner could only finish third in this race last year when sent-off as the favourite, but he ran a terrific race in the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham and the form of that race was boosted when Supasundae won the Aintree Hurdle on Thursday. This race normally goes to one of the market leaders so, with Apple’s Jade not running up to her best at Cheltenham, Sam Spinner looks the obvious alternative to the favourite.

There are two reasons to try and take on Tiger Roll in this year’s Grand National, which are favourites have a poor record in the Grand National and no horse has won more than one Grand National for over forty years. That’s why it could be worth taking him on with Rathvinden who looks to have the right mix of class and stamina to win a Grand National. He proved that stamina by winning last season’s National Hunt Chase, whilst he’s five pounds well-in after claiming the Bobbyjo Chase last time out. He also has the services of Ruby Walsh in the saddle.

However, it’s always also worth chancing an outsider in the National and Valseur Lido could outrun his odds. A grade one winner at his peak, his slipping handicap mark means he gets to carry a light-weight for the first-time in a big handicap and he could give the excellent Rachael Blackmore a great ride over the famous fences.
