The English football season will officially start on Sunday 4th August when the 97th edition of the Community Shield will take place on Wembley. It’s the Premier League winners against the FA Cup winners but since Manchester City won both titles Liverpool will participate as league runner ups. Nevertheless, on Sunday we will hopefully see a terrific game between the English Champions and the European Champions from last season.

Liverpool came close last season to end their wait for a first ever Premier League title, but in the end Manchester City simply proved too big an obstacle for them to overcome. They did, however, lift yet another Champions League trophy and now get to fight for the first title of the season as league runners-up at Wembley. However, preseason hasn’t been particularly great for Jürgen Klopp and his team. They beat Lyon on Wednesday but prior to that had lost against Dortmund, Sevilla, and Napoli. Liverpool having pretty much the same team as last season, they should be ready for the new season. But a big question is, what is the status of Salah, Mané and Firmino after a tiring summer with international football.

Manchester City:
Manchester City will be fighting for their 3rd consecutive Premier League title this season. Also, they are the defending champions of the Community Shield and their preseason have been more promising then Liverpool. Most recent they won against Yokohama 3-1, having a preseason result with 3 wins in 4 games. Their only failure was a goalless draw against Wolves in the Premier League Asia Trophy, a game which they lost on penalties. It’s been a summer of stability for both Manchester City and Liverpool, with only one potential first team starter, Rodri signed by Manchester City from Atlético Madrid.

Our Tip

We think City are better prepared to open the season with a win. Liverpool have put in a number of troubling performances in preseason, and the status of their three top players are worrisome.
