ELK Studios Brings the CollectR Mechanic to the Construction Site
ELK Studios has unveiled its latest entry in the CollectR series — Concrete Cowboys — shifting the franchise’s setting from ancient Egypt and mystical elements to the gritty world of skyscraper construction. According to a review published by Bigwinboard, the studio has packed a substantial amount of content into this release, including three distinct minigames and several bonus rounds.
The game follows four construction workers navigating workplace hazards — including a character named Karen in HR, dynamite, and tunnels — as they work their way up a downtown high-rise. It’s a noticeable departure from the animal-themed CollectR titles like Dam Beavers and Huff N’ Puff CollectR, though the underlying mechanic remains familiar to fans of the series.
How the CollectR Mechanic Works
Concrete Cowboys is built around a 5x5 grid where four Collector symbols move horizontally or vertically to gather gems matching their colour, as well as any feature symbols within reach. Collectors are unaffected by gravity and can swap places when adjacent to one another. Gems can be upgraded through seven levels, starting at 0.05x–0.1x the bet and rising to 5x–12.5x at the maximum level. Wilds also count as payout symbols.
A meter above the grid tracks collected symbols across three fill stages — requiring 20, 30, and 40 symbols respectively — which can trigger up to three pending Wrecking Balls. These hit sections of the grid, clearing pay symbols and potentially eliminating Collectors. If all four Collectors are knocked out by Wrecking Balls, Dynamite, or the Transform symbol, the Heaven minigame is triggered.
Three Minigames Add Depth
Beyond the base game, Concrete Cowboys features the Building Time, Employee of the Month, and Heaven minigames, each played on expanded grids with their own symbol sets and mechanics. Bigwinboard notes that the minigame sequences carry a visual resemblance to early console games, describing them as having a Donkey Kong-like feel.
Key Stats for UK Players
