Thunderkick Takes Hot Potato to the Warzone
Thunderkick has launched Hot Potato Battleground, a sequel to its 2023 slot Hot Potato that swaps city streets for a military battleground. According to a review by Bigwinboard, the developer has kept the foundations of the original intact while layering on a range of new features and a completely different visual identity.
Where the first game had an urban street food feel, Hot Potato Battleground drops players into a forest-and-mountain warzone where ordnance flies, things explode, and there is apparently even a nuke involved. Thunderkick describes it as a significant tonal shift — though, as Bigwinboard puts it, the game creates a sort of “Worms effect” on screen.
How the Game Works
The slot runs on a 7x7 grid using a cluster pays mechanic. Wins are formed when five or more matching symbols connect horizontally or vertically. Winning symbols are then removed, triggering an avalanche that refills the grid and continues until no new clusters are created.
Pay symbols run from apples at the lower end up to chefs at the top, with the largest clusters of 25 or more paying between 10x and 100x the bet. Wilds substitute for all regular pay symbols.
The game carries an RTP of 94.23% — worth noting for UK players, as this sits below the typical 96% benchmark you might find elsewhere. Bets range from $€0.10 to $€100 per spin, with volatility rated on the higher side.
Features and Extras
Hot Potato Battleground retains the Exploding Wild and Multiplier Grid from the original, while introducing new mechanics including Land Support, Sniper Support, Air Support, Radar Symbol Transformations, and the Nuke.
Three scatter symbols in the base game trigger 8 free spins. During that round, landing another three scatters adds a further 4 spins. Crucially, the Multiplier Grid does not reset between free spins, which is where the bigger multiplier growth tends to accumulate.
For those wanting to influence how often the bonus fires, Thunderkick has included ante bet options. Bonus Boost (1.7x stake) or Bonus Boost Plus (3x stake) make the bonus 4x or 10x more likely to trigger respectively. Bonus Boost Extreme costs 10x the stake and targets one bonus every 10 spins on average. A feature buy is also available for 100x the stake.
Worth Knowing for UK Players
The 94.23% RTP is on the lower end, so it is worth checking the game info panel before playing. As always with high-volatility slots, results can swing significantly in either direction.
