Harry Kane in Career-Best Form as England Prepare to Face Mexico
Harry Kane insists he is in the best physical condition of his career as England set their sights on a World Cup last-16 showdown with Mexico, according to reporting from The Guardian.
The Bayern Munich striker was the difference-maker in England’s dramatic group-stage finale against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, equalising with a clever header before hammering in a second that left even seasoned observers open-mouthed. Former France forward Thierry Henry, speaking on Fox after the game, highlighted just how technically demanding the finish was — striking with the inside of the foot while off-balance and still generating real power.
The goals were Kane’s 83rd and 84th for England in 118 caps, and he now has five at this tournament from four games — enough to put him in contention for the Golden Boot. He has also surpassed Gary Lineker’s record for England goals scored at a World Cup.
Perhaps just as striking as the goals themselves is the physical data behind Kane’s performances. He has covered 43,433 metres in total — more than any other England player at this World Cup. For a striker who was written off by some sections of the media after quiet showings at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, that mileage tells its own story.
“It’s probably the best I’ve felt in my career,” Kane told reporters. “I made a conscious effort at the start of this season to be even fitter, to take care of myself even more, looking at different ways to recover better.”
Kane credited Germany’s winter break and Bayern Munich’s ability to rest him — due to their dominance in the Bundesliga — as factors in his current sharpness. He now has 72 goals for club and country this season and is reportedly in the conversation for the Ballon d’Or.
His partnership with Jude Bellingham has been central to England’s progress, but Thomas Tuchel’s squad is not without its problems. The wide players have struggled for consistency, the midfield looks fatigued, the defence has shown vulnerabilities, and there is an injury concern at right-back. None of that will get easier in Mexico City.
Kane acknowledged the altitude at the Azteca Stadium is a genuine challenge. England spent ten days doing heat training in Florida but had limited options when it came to preparing for the thin air, short of basing the squad in Mexico altogether.
With so much riding on Kane’s shoulders, England will need him to keep delivering where it counts. Check our World Cup 2026 hub for previews of the last-16 tie, and keep an eye on the live standings as the knockout phase gets under way.
