Iran and New Zealand share the spoils in Group G thriller
New Zealand struck early and led twice, but Iran pegged them back on both occasions to claim a 2–2 draw in their World Cup 2026 hub Group G opener on 15 June 2026.

Just strikes again before Iran hit back
New Zealand restored their advantage early in the second period. Just grabbed a second goal in the 54th minute, putting his side back in front and threatening to secure all three points for the All Whites.
Iran refused to be beaten, however. Mohebi levelled matters in the 64th minute to make it 2–2 and ensure both teams would walk away with a share of the points. Neither side could find a winner in the remaining minutes, and the draw stood.
The result leaves the group in a state of perfect parity. According to the live World Cup 2026 standings, New Zealand, Iran, Belgium and Egypt are all level on one point each from their opening games, meaning every team in Group G still has everything to play for heading into the second round of fixtures.
