Iran Granted Extra Time to Prepare for Egypt Showdown
Iran will be permitted to enter the United States 48 hours before their decisive Group G fixture against Egypt in Seattle on 26 June, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed — a significant change from the conditions applied to their first two World Cup matches.
According to The Guardian, the Iranian squad has been based in Mexico throughout the tournament and was previously allowed only 24 hours in the US before each game, with the team required to leave the country on the evening of the final whistle. That tight schedule drew sharp criticism from Iran’s coaching staff and players, who argued it put them at a clear competitive disadvantage, particularly around post-match recovery.
After Iran’s opening match against New Zealand, head coach Amir Ghalenoei said his side were the “most oppressed” team at the tournament. Captain Mehdi Taremi went further, describing the overall logistical situation in recent weeks as a “disaster”.
The team had also been preparing to file an official complaint with Fifa over what they described as restrictions imposed by tournament organisers.
A DHS spokesperson, speaking to NBC, confirmed the updated arrangements: the Iranian squad will be allowed to travel to Seattle two days ahead of kick-off and will be expected to depart on the evening the match concludes. The spokesperson added that the priority was ensuring safety and security not only around stadiums but also at base camps and training sites.
Iran’s participation at the 2026 World Cup comes against a complicated diplomatic backdrop, with the US and Iran currently engaged in talks aimed at resolving a conflict between the two nations that began in February.
On the pitch, Iran have drawn both of their Group G games and still have a realistic path to the knockout rounds. A win over Egypt would confirm their progression, while a draw could also be enough depending on other results in the group. Check the live standings for the latest picture as Friday’s games unfold.
