Quansah Suspended for Two Matches After Mexico Red Card
England defender Jarell Quansah has been handed a two-match ban by Fifa following his red card in England’s last-16 win over Mexico at the World Cup, according to The Guardian. The sanction, confirmed on Thursday, was issued on the grounds of serious foul play and leaves Quansah out of both the quarter-final and any potential semi-final.
The dismissal came in the 54th minute after Quansah stretched into a challenge on Mexico left-back Jesus Gallardo. Referee Alireza Faghani initially took no action but reviewed the incident at the pitch-side monitor after being called over by the video assistant referee, using slow-motion replays and freeze-frames before showing the red card.
Thomas Tuchel must now solve a right-back problem ahead of Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway in Miami. Djed Spence is considered the most natural fit for the role, while Ezri Konsa filled in at right-back after Quansah’s exit against Mexico. Tuchel has reportedly been reluctant to break up Konsa’s central defensive partnership with Marc Guéhi if he can avoid it. Reece James, sidelined for the past three matches with a hamstring injury, remains a doubt but could feature from the bench.
The Football Association is understood to have raised concerns with Fifa over the manner of the dismissal, though there is no right of appeal against red cards at this tournament. That said, the situation has been complicated by Fifa’s own controversial decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban after the USA forward was sent off against Bosnia and Herzegovina — a call that has raised questions about consistency in how cards are being handled.
England teammates have expressed their sympathy. Bukayo Saka said it was “very frustrating” but added that the squad would have to adapt and move on. Nico O’Reilly echoed that sentiment, saying he was gutted for Quansah but that the decision had been made and the defender had come to terms with it.
