Henderson Out of World Cup After Freak Injury in Celebrations
England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup last-16 was overshadowed by a painful postscript: Jordan Henderson has broken his wrist and is out of the tournament after falling over an advertising board during the post-match celebrations.
According to The Guardian, the former Liverpool captain — who had been an unused substitute on the night — was seen receiving oxygen from medical staff and was carried off on a stretcher shortly after the full-time whistle. He was subsequently taken to hospital, where a broken wrist was confirmed.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel acknowledged the sombre note to an otherwise historic evening: “Jordan injured his wrist, it just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is not with us.”
Jude Bellingham, speaking to the BBC, said the squad had rallied around Henderson, adding that everyone was there to support him even amid the uncertainty about his condition.
On the pitch, it had been a hard-fought win. Bellingham scored twice and Harry Kane added a penalty as England progressed, though the contest grew increasingly tense after Jarell Quansah was sent off early in the second half for catching Jesús Gallardo with his studs. England held on with ten men to seal the result 3-2.
Henderson had featured sparingly in the tournament, making his only appearance as an 84th-minute substitute in the group stage against Panama. He had also been booked during the Mexico game following a confrontation on the sidelines.
The wrist injury is a cruel blow for the experienced midfielder, who now misses the remainder of England’s campaign just as the knockout rounds heat up.
