Tillman Fires USA Into Last 16 With Historic Free Kick
Malik Tillman delivered one of the moments of the tournament so far at the 2026 World Cup, scoring a stunning direct free kick to help the United States beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 and advance to the last 16. According to The Guardian, the goal was only the second direct free kick scored by a USMNT player at a World Cup — the first being Eric Wynalda’s effort back in 1994.
The story behind the goal is almost as remarkable as the finish itself. Late in the second half, Tillman’s right boot was ripped open after an opponent stood on it. The US equipment manager sprinted to the dressing room to fetch a replacement, but rather than swap both boots, Tillman simply put on the new right boot and carried on — with a blood-stained sock underneath the left.
Minutes later, with the US already down to ten men following Folarin Balogun’s red card, Tillman stepped up to a free kick just outside the box. After consulting with Antonee Robinson, he looped the ball over the wall and into the net, all but putting the game to bed.
“I practiced this in training, and I’m happy with it,” Tillman said after the win, acknowledging that some team-mates had doubted his decision to go over the wall.
Captain Tim Ream was full of praise, telling reporters Tillman had been one of the team’s best players throughout the tournament, describing him as someone who makes “hard things look easy.”
Tillman’s journey to this stage has not been straightforward. He was among the players cut from the US squad for the 2022 World Cup under Gregg Berhalter, and spent several years being called into camp without nailing down a regular starting spot. His breakthrough came last summer when he committed to the Gold Cup — one of few Europe-based players to do so — and became Pochettino’s first-choice playmaker throughout the competition.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino was effusive after the Bosnia win, noting it had been “a tough season for him at Leverkusen” but that Tillman was now thriving on the biggest stage.
With Balogun suspended for the last-16 clash against Belgium, Tillman’s creativity and set-piece threat will be absolutely central to US hopes of reaching a first World Cup quarter-final since 2002. As a footnote, Tillman’s ruined boot has already been sent to the Fifa museum — a fitting memento of a performance that may well define his international career.
