Chalobah Fulfils Eight-Year-Old World Cup Prediction
Trevoh Chalobah is living proof that patience pays off. The Chelsea centre-half has joined England’s squad at the World Cup in North America as a late replacement, fulfilling a promise he made to himself — and posted publicly — back in 2018.
According to The Guardian, Chalobah was on a post-season holiday in New York when manager Thomas Tuchel tried to reach him last Monday. The 25-year-old had been to the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix the previous weekend, then moved along the Côte d’Azur to Cannes before flying to New York. He was browsing the shops in Times Square when Tuchel’s message arrived — and did not see it for two hours.
When he returned to his hotel and spotted the text, he knew immediately what it meant. “My heart just dropped,” Chalobah told The Guardian. Tuchel followed up with a video call, smiling as he delivered the news: a place in the England squad. “This is the No 1 moment of my career,” Chalobah said.
The vacancy arose because Tino Livramento was forced out of the squad with a calf injury picked up in training on the Sunday. FIFA regulations allow replacements for injured outfield players up to 24 hours before a team’s first match, and England kicked off with a 4–2 win over Croatia in Dallas last Wednesday. Chalobah flew directly from New York to Kansas City, where the squad is based, in time to meet the players returning from that game.
The scramble extended to his kit. Chalobah had given his boots away at the end of the season, with a fresh pair due to be delivered in Los Angeles — his next planned stop. He had to fast-track that arrangement once the call came through.
A Career Built on Resilience
