Blackjack has the lowest house edge of any classic casino game β but only if you play it correctly. Basic strategy turns a 2%+ edge into less than 0.5%.
Basic strategy is non-negotiable
A blackjack strategy chart tells you the mathematically optimal action for every combination of your hand and the dealerβs upcard. Memorise it. Use a printable chart when playing online. Most UK casinos allow this.
Key rules to remember
- Always split aces and 8s.
- Never split 10s, 5s, or 4s.
- Always hit soft 17 or below; stand on hard 17+.
- Double down on 11 against any dealer card except an ace.
- Surrender (when allowed) on hard 16 vs dealer 9, 10, or A.
Common UK variants
- Classic blackjack: dealer stands on soft 17, low house edge.
- European blackjack: dealer takes a hole card after the player acts β affects double-down strategy.
- Live dealer: real human croupiers, similar rules to classic.
- Free Bet Blackjack and Blackjack Switch: rule variants that change basic strategy and house edge.
Read the rules card before sitting down.
Bankroll management
- Decide a session bankroll you can lose.
- Set a unit bet (1β2% of the bankroll).
- Walk away at a hard stop β both on losses and on a doubling of bankroll.
What does not work
Progressive betting systems (Martingale, Paroli) do not change the house edge. They just shift how losses are distributed over time. Stick to basic strategy and flat bets.
Card counting online
Counting only works against a live deck that is not reshuffled every hand. Online RNG blackjack reshuffles every round, so counting has no effect there. Some live tables use continuous shufflers, reducing the value of counting.
