The January 2026 UKGC wagering cap is the single biggest change to UK casino bonus economics since the affordability rules of 2022. The headline is simple: no UKGC-licensed casino can require more than 10x wagering on a bonus. The practice is more complicated, because operators have responded with three distinct strategies — and only one of them genuinely benefits UK players.
What the cap actually requires
The cap applies to bonus-only wagering. A casino offering a £100 bonus can require no more than £1,000 in wagering before withdrawal of bonus winnings.
The grey area is bonus-plus-deposit wagering. An operator offering a £100 bonus on a £100 deposit can apply the 10x to the combined £200, effectively requiring £2,000 in play. The Commission’s guidance treats this as compliant if the structure is transparently disclosed. Several UK operators have shifted to this model since January.
How operators responded — three strategies
Strategy 1: Reduce wagering. A small number of UKGC operators simply reduced wagering from 35x to 10x and kept the bonus value the same. This is the genuinely player-positive response. Casumo and a handful of others run something close to this.
Strategy 2: Reduce bonus value, keep practical play-through similar. Many operators reduced their match-bonus headline from “100% up to £500” to “100% up to £100” or “100% up to £25” while running 10x on the new lower number. Read the bonus terms: a £25 bonus at 10x means £250 in play. A pre-cap £200 bonus at 35x meant £7,000 in play. The new offer requires less wagering but the player also gets a smaller bonus.
Strategy 3: Move to wager-free spins + small deposit-match. MrVegas, Videoslots, and Pink Casino have all leaned into wager-free spin structures because spin winnings are credited as cash, not bonus, and the wagering cap therefore does not apply. This is currently the most player-favourable structure in the UK market.
Where the loopholes are
Two structural workarounds are growing in 2026:
Fragmented welcome packages. A “£500 welcome package” split across four £125 deposits, with each deposit’s bonus subject to its own 10x wagering, is mathematically equivalent to the old single 50x-wagering bonus from a player’s perspective but technically compliant. Several major operators have moved this direction.
Combined bonus+deposit wagering. As noted, applying 10x to bonus + deposit doubles the effective wagering. Disclose-and-comply.
The Commission’s enforcement priorities for 2026 explicitly include “wagering structures designed to circumvent the bonus cap.” We expect at least one enforcement action against fragmented-package structures within the first 12 months of the rules.
